Mac Screenshot Guide
Learn all the different ways to capture your screen on macOS using keyboard shortcuts and built-in tools.
1. Full Screen Screenshot
- Press Command (⌘) + Shift + 3 simultaneously
- The screenshot will be saved as a PNG file on your desktop
- To copy to clipboard instead, add Control to the shortcut
2. Partial Screen Screenshot
- Press Command (⌘) + Shift + 4
- Your cursor will turn into a crosshair
- Click and drag to select the area you want to capture
- Release to take the screenshot (saved to desktop)
- Press Escape to cancel
3. Window Screenshot
- Press Command (⌘) + Shift + 4
- Press the Spacebar - cursor changes to a camera
- Move the camera over a window to highlight it
- Click to capture just that window
4. Touch Bar Screenshot (MacBook Pro)
- Press Command (⌘) + Shift + 6
- The screenshot will be saved to your desktop
5. Using Screenshot App (macOS Mojave and later)
- Press Command (⌘) + Shift + 5
- Select from the screenshot toolbar that appears:
- Capture entire screen
- Capture selected window
- Capture selected portion
- Use options to choose save location or set timer
Additional Tips
- Hold Control with any screenshot shortcut to copy to clipboard instead of saving
- After dragging with Command+Shift+4, hold Spacebar to move the selection
- Hold Option while resizing to change from center
- Screenshots are saved as PNG files by default
